Staying Active

Staying active as you get older is essential for promoting mental sharpness, emotional wellbeing and longevity.

There are several ways to maintain this:

Chair exercises are a great way for people to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility while reducing the risk of falls.

  • Just 10-15 mins per day can improve your health.
  • Movements include seated marching, leg extensions, torso twists and shoulder rolls.
  • Use a sturdy armless chair, have good posture and be consistent.

Community activities: Low-impact community activities that will offer social interaction as well as getting fit.

  • Join a walking group: A good way to do a cardiovascular workout.
  • Yoga and Tai Chi: Help with coordination and balance.
  • Swimming: Low-impact full-body exercise, this could be lengths, water aerobics, or water walking.
  • Dancing: Join a local tea dance.

Mental stimulation and hobbies: Keeping the mind and body active.

  • Jigsaw puzzles
  • Word searches
  • Board Games
  • Knitting
