The famous Pocahontas died in Gravesend and was buried in St George's Church.

Over the years, the story has been romanticised, most famously by Disney's animated film in 1995.

Many places, landmarks and cultural works bear her name.

Pocahontas (which was a childhood nickname) converted to Christianity, was baptised, and became Rebecca. In 1613, she married John Rolfe and had a son, Thomas Rolfe.

She became a celebrity but fell ill on her return to Virginia in 1617. The ship she was on stopped at Gravesend, where she was taken off, but she died shortly after, aged around 21.

The exact spot is not known because the church was burned in 1727, and it was rebuilt on the same site in the early 1730s. Any exact marker or grave location from 1617 was lost.

In the churchyard of St George's, there is a life-sized bronze statue of Pocahontas.
