Staying Hydrated

The elderly must stay hydrated year-round, not just in the summer.
Tips for staying hydrated
- Warm options: Herbal teas, hot water with lemon, decaf coffee, and broths can also be hydrating and comforting.
- Water - rich foods: Oranges, melon, cucumber, courgettes, and even jelly.
- Make it appealing: Try different milkshakes or smoothies, or add fruit to plain water.
- Set reminders: remembering to drink can be difficult, so use a phone or write down cues to prompt regular drinking throughout the day.
- Keeping drinks accessible: Not everyone can get up to make regular drinks, so ensure drinks are within reach; jugs and flasks can be used too.
Why is hydration key in the winter
- Fluid loss: Cold air increases fluid loss, indoor heating dries the air and also through breathing
- Health risks: Being dehydrated can lead to dizziness, headaches, confusion, and being more at risk for having a fall or contracting a UTI (urinary tract infection)
- Reduced thirst: As you get older, your thirst sensation decreases, making it easier to forget to drink
What counts towards Fluid intake and what to avoid
- Avoid Alcohol – it does hydrate and can worsen dehydration
- Water. Squash, milk, tea, coffee, juice, soup and water from food all count towards staying hydrated.
